Sydney Festival opens today with a city-wide celebration of art, which runs across 24 action-packed days through to 28 January, taking in 50+ venues and enlisting the talents of hundreds of international and local artists. Events are held across the city including Parramatta, Bondi Beach, Casula and Blacktown. Sydney Festival has something for everyone this January. Some things to see are free whilst others are not free.

Sydney Festival artistic director Olivia Ansell launched the Sydney Festival at the opening day press call held at Watermans Cove, Barangaroo.

Te Aranganui choir, a traditional Maori choir welcomed Lisa Reihana and her massive water-based octopus artwork, Te Wheke-a-Muturangi: The Adversary, to its festival home at Watermans Cove.

And the sensational late-night cabaret superstars of Smashed: The Nightcap put on a show with their live band. Tickets to see the show at the Sydney Theatre Company at Walsh Bay start at $59 plus booking fee. More info here .

Later, the giant four-metre tall Snuff Puppet Seagulls pestered the crowd for food. The seagulls can be seen at different locations for free at specific times listed here .
